July 31, 2013:  St. Ignatius of Loyola

Ps 99:5, 6, 7, 9  Holy is the Lord our God.

Mt 13:44-46  Kingdom is like person selling all to buy field with buried treasure, merchant selling all to buy pearl of great price.

Re gospel, hear and sing along with (#16, p.19) Dan Schutte's I found the treasure, from collection The Steadfast Love.

  • Tie:  Moses' radiant face, sunglasses for his veil.
  • Suspenders:  green for field with buried treasure
  • Shirt:  green for field, white for Moses' radiance, blue for sky with clouds (re "pillar of cloud" from psalm)

Tie pins:

Stone:  tablets of commandments

Jewel:  treasure

Pearl:  ... of great price

Horse:  see chapter 2 of Autobiography of St. Ignatius.

"Love" sticker on suspenders, affixed by Lucy years ago, refers (among other things) to the prominent place of love in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola (complete text here), especially the Contemplation to Gain Love (§234).

Remember Take, Lord, Receive, Fr. John Foley's setting of that Contemplation, from the St. Louis Jesuits Earthen Vessels collection?  Check it out fresh:

Martha

July 29, 2013:  St. Martha

EX 32:15-24, 30-34  Moses came down with the tablets of the commandments, saw the calf and dancing, broke tablets, fused/ground/scattered calf.  Aaron recounts; Moses reproves, intercedes.

PS 106:19-20, 21-22, 23  Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.  Ancestors forgot God, forged calf; Moses turned back God's wrath.

JN 11:19-27  Martha, Mary, Jesus re Lazarus:  “If you had been here, my brother would not have died."  “Your brother will rise.”  “I know--on the last day.”  “I am the resurrection."  “I believe you are the Christ.”
OR
LK 10:38-42  Martha, burdened with serving, wants help while sister Mary sits at Lord's feet.  Jesus:  "Mary has chosen the better part."

  • Red suspenders:  Moses' anger
  • Calculator tie for Sunday's first reading.  (I often refer to Sunday's readings on Monday.)

  • Question mark tie pin: Moses' question to Aaron (v21), Jesus' to Martha (Jn 11:26), Martha's to Jesus (Lk 10:40),
  • Brown square tie pin represents tablets with commandments (like stone used last week did)

Readings:  http://usccb.org/bible/readings/072813.cfm

GN 18:20-32  Abraham negotiates with the LORD to spare Sodom if 50 45 40 30 20 10 innocent people are found in it.

PS 138:1-2, 2-3, 6-7, 7-8  Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.  In the presence of the angels I will sing your praise.

COL 2:12-14  In baptism, you were buried then raised with Christ, forgiven.

LK 11:1-13  "Teach us to pray."  "Our Father..."  Importunate friend appeased. Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened.  What father would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?   Father in heaven will give Holy Spirit to those who ask.

Lucy painted the fish from the Gospel onto my thumb.  (A dove would have also worked.)

PS:  If I were wearing a tie today, I would have pulled out my calculator tie and abacus and "angel" tie pins. There have been and will be other opportunities...

Ps 132:11, 13-14, 17-18 The Lord has chosen Zion for his dwelling.
Mt 13:16-17 Blessed your eyes and ears. Many longed to see and hear what you do.

PS:  We don't know about Mary's parents from Scripture.  Do we know anything from anywhere about Joseph's??

Welcome

For months I've been choosing the day's clothing based on the Bible readings of the day (http://usccb.org/bible/readings).  Folks have suggested I post daily pix, but I've resisted.  Now that I set up a place for it, maybe I'll give it a try...
