- Am 5:14-15, 21-24 Seek good, not evil, that you may live; then will the Lord be with you! I spurn your feasts, reject your offerings, and won't listen to your songs. Let your offerings be justice and goodness.
- Ps 50:7-13, 16bc-17 "To the upright I will show the saving power of God." I will testify against you, but not for your sacrifices. You profess my covenant with your mouth but hate discipline...
- Mt 8:28-34 Two demoniacs cried to Jesus, “What have you to do with us, Son of God?,” then pleaded, “If you drive us out, send us into those swine.” / “Go!” They entered the swine, and the herd drowned. The swineherds reported everything, and everyone begged Jesus to leave.

- Creighton: “Seek good and not evil, that you may live” is the core of today's message; it expresses God’s longing for us. Amos is talking about living to the fullest, with God as our focus, embracing life and God’s desire for us. If we seek good, we'll find love, joy, and God.
If we seek good, we'll fall in love with God. Our lives will be defined by, and filled with, Love that will transform us, so we may offer it to others. How are we seeking good? Where/how does evil get in the way? How is God calling us to fall in Love?
Miracle of the Gadarene swine
- One Bread, One Body: "Rejection": Rejections can be painful. Jesus never rejected anyone but has been and is rejected more than anyone else. The people in today's gospel rejected Jesus and begged him to leave. At the cost of the pigs, Jesus profited the town by opening the road that the demoniacs had closed, making it possible for commerce to be resumed. When they sent him away, they gained nothing: the road had been opened, the pigs lost. Jesus had more to give them, but they rejected him and his blessings fearing the cost. Jesus is the Sign of Contradiction and Stumbling-Stone. Each of us must decide whether to accept him and acknowledge our dependence on his love and mercy.
- Passionist: "Life, freedom, love!" Today’s readings depict God’s love challenging human sinfulness. Amos speaks of the value of seeking good and doing justice, letting faith come alive. In the gospel Jesus drives away two demons, promoting the dignity of the men they possessed.
God’s love is at work as we celebrate Independence Day. The demonic power of evil afflicts us: our festivities are tempered by violence, environmental challenges, racism, economic woes, etc.. We recall our blessings and are invited to see God has a plan to address today's challenges. Jesus' wisdom and love challenges evil and drives it away, helping form a free, life-affirming, generous people. He comes to set us free from our “demons” of sinfulness and selfishness. May we move beyond the violence, selfishness, fear, and mistrust to celebrate our freedom and share God’s love and life with those in need. Father, open our hearts to the truth of your Son's gospel, that your peace rule us, your justice guide us (cf. today's opening prayer).
- DailyScripture.net: "Jesus frees": No force can keep us from what God offers those who seek him; the Lord is ready and willing to free us from whatever binds us. May we part with anything that might keep us from his love....
