Readings
    Wordle: Readings 10-12-13
  • Jl 4:12-21  I'll sit in judgment.  Near is the day of the Lord.  Lord is refuge to his people.  Mountains shall drip wine, channels flow with water.
  • Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12  "Rejoice in the Lord, you just!"  The Lord is king; the heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory.
  • Lk 11:27-28  Woman:  “Blessed is the womb that carried you...”   Jesus: “Blessed those who hear and keep God's word.”

Daily reflections
  • Pope Francis:  Need dialogue of life, everyday experience—a real, concrete culture of encounter leading to authentic relationships.
  • Creighton:  Pope:  “Meet one another doing good.  ‘But I'm an atheist.’  But do good: We will meet one another there.”
  • RC.net:  True kinship through adoption   Do I hunger for God's word?

October 11

October 11, 2013: Friday, 27th week, Ordinary Time

Readings

  • Ps 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9  "The Lord will judge the world with justice."  I exult in you, declare your wondrous deeds.  You destroyed the wicked.

  •  Lk 11:15-26  Every kingdom divided will be laid waste, but if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then God's Kingdom has come upon you.  Whoever is not with me is against me.

      Daily reflections
      • Pope Francis:  “Am I vigilant?  Do I guard myself, my heart, feelings, thoughts, the treasure of grace, the Holy Spirit?"  Don't follow Jesus just halfway. (today's homily)
      • RC.net:  What kind of protection do I seek?  How do I fill the void in my life?
      • Creighton:  Don’t confuse me with facts.  Don't sit on the fence.  Let actions speak loudly, in sync with words.

      Attire

      • "Clocks" tie:  "The day of the Lord is near" (1st reading)
      • "Scales" pin:  "The Lord will judge the world with justice" (psalm)
      • "Decapitated skeleton" tie pin:  "if I drive out demons by the finger of God" (gospel) [no reference to upcoming celebration of All Hallows' Eve]

      Music
On Wednesday all three readings were about God's forgiveness, including the Our Father (Luke's "forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us"; cf. Matthew's "forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors").  The country song "Look it up" (Presley/Orrall) reminds me how hard it can be to forgive one who's wronged us:  "The word's forgiveness, look it up.  It's what Jesus has in store for you, but I don't no matter what."  I didn't post it Wednesday because of the language at the end, but I just found Bailey and Lowe's cover that avoids it and IMHO is better than the original to boot.  (Here's more including lyrics.)

      • Jon 4:1-11  Jonah, angry God didn't destroy Nineveh as he'd prophesied:  "Take me now."  God:  “Why be angry?”  Jonah built hut; Lord provided plant for shade, then worm to wither it, then burning wind.  "I'd be better off dead." / “You're concerned over the plant you didn't raise.  Shouldn't I be concerned over Nineveh with its 120K+ people, plus cattle?"

      • Ps 86:3-6, 9-10  "Lord, you are merciful and gracious."  Have mercy on me, good, forgiving, kind Lord.  Hear my pleading.  All shall worship you who do wonders.
      • Lk 11:1-4  “Teach us to pray.” / "Father, hallowed be your name..."

      Music (gospel)
      • "Echo Our Father," from Communion Muse/ Sr. Juliana Garza (from Sunday night Mass at Caltech, where we lowered it to A)
      • Our Father/ Malotte (The recording is curious to me since it seems to be at a Catholic Mass in Italy, and this setting, perhaps beautiful as a solo, wouldn't be my first choice for the assembly at Mass even in the US.)
      • Russian Orthodox chant
      • The chant we usually sing faster and more in the rhythm of the spoken word
Please submit links to other versions (especially audio [clips] and/or sheet music [samples] of ones suitable for congregational participation) as comments below!
