Readings

    Wordle: Readings 10-21-13
  • Rom 4:20-25  The faith that empowered Abraham to give God glory is also for us.
  • Lk 1:69-75  "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people."  God set us free, raised up savior, showed mercy.
  • Lk 12:13-21  Guard against greed; be rich in what matters to God:  Rich man who built larger barns to store bountiful harvest died that night.

Reflections
  • Pope Francis homily:  Money can contribute to human development, but greed makes you sick and destroys relationships.  Instead, trust in God who knows what we need.  Lord gives us everything to help others.  Lower yourself; serve.
  • RC.net:  What is my treasure?  Augustine:  guard against greed = fill yourselves with love; Cyril:  rich toward God = loving virtue, open to poor.  Flip side of the great commandments...
  • Creighton:  Faith:  accept God's invitation to ongoing relationship; Abraham as model
  • Universalis:  St. John of Bridlington, reluctant prior

Music

Apparel

  • "Angel with horn" tie pin:  "He has raised up a horn for our salvation" (response) [OK; κέρας can be the musical instrument but in Lk 1:69 is more likely an animal horn, symbol of strength.]

  • "Penny pincher" button:  be rich in what matters to God (gospel)
  • "Hands" tie:  Jesus "who was handed over for our transgressions" (1st reading), "salvation from the hand of all who hate us" / "rescued from the hand of our enemies" (response) (plus hands of Moses from Sunday)
