October 16

October 16, 2013:   Wednesday, 28th week, Ordinary Time

Readings
    Wordle: Readings 10-16-13
  • Rom 2:1-11  Don't judge or be stubborn.  God is the only judge:  just, kind, patient, impartial.

  • Ps 62:2-3, 6-7, 9  "Lord, you give back to everyone according to his works."  I rest in God alone, my rock, salvation, stronghold, hope, refuge.  Pour out your hearts to him.

  • Lk 11:42-46  "Woe to you Pharisees!  You don't love God."   "What about us lawyers?"  "Woe to you too!  You impose burdens but don't help."

    Today's Saints, via Universalis

    • St. Hedwig, mother of 7, nun
    • St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, nun promoted devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus
    • St. Marguerite d'Youville, mother of 2, nun
    • St. Richard Gwyn, husband, father of 6, teacher, martyr
    • St. Gall, hermit

    Reflections
    • Pope Francis homily:  We need to worship, will worship something else if not God.  What are my idols--what takes God's place?  Go by truth, not appearances.  Alms heal hypocrisy.  Worship, love God above all; love neighbor.
    • Pope Francis audience:  Church founded upon Apostles, sent forth by Jesus.  Invite all to know Gospel, faith, eternal life.
    • RC.net:  Woe = pity + anger.  Leaders misled, burdened, obscured, defiled, infected.  How do I love, help?
    • Creighton:  Don't discount God’s mercy and our need for it.

      Music

      Apparel
      • Scales tie (new thrift store find):  God alone is just judge (1st reading)
      • "Rock" tie pin:  God alone is my rock (psalm)
      • "Hearts" suspenders and red shirt:  St. Margaret Mary–fostered devotion to Jesus' compassionate heart (feast), loving God (gospel)
      Personal note
Jesus' rebuke of external-only observance in this week's gospels is not lost to me as I don readings-related apparel externally.  Being truly clothed in Christ, inside and out, is a daily challenge...
